Have you ever started working on a goal with enthusiasm, only to find that all of your motivation disappears as soon as things get tough? Here are some important mindset hacks that have helped me lose 50 lbs and keep me motivated:
Think of your mind as a muscle: If you neglect your muscles by under-eating protein and limiting physical activity, they will adapt to that unfavorable state regardless of how you feel about it. It's the same thing with your mind/thoughts. If you consistently focus on the unhelpful thoughts ("I can never reach my goal", "My body will never look good", "I just don't think I can be successful", "Nothing I have tried works", "I messed up my macros today so the whole week is forfeit"), "I have never been motivated", your mind will get good at thinking those thoughts. The more positive thoughts you think, however, the more you condition your mind to believe them. Fake it till you make it!
Being kind to yourself: You have full control over your internal monologue, and saying negative things about yourself is only going to slow you down while making you feel anxious. Being and staying fit is a lifelong pursuit, and you get to choose your adventure. Motivation is a temporary feeling, so your goals should be rooted in love and positivity. For example, instead of "I want to lose weight because I do not like the way I look," reframe it as "I want to lose weight because I want to be a healthier version of myself."
Have an alter ego: What does the highest/best version of yourself do every day? What are they like? Are they active? Are they committed to their goals? Do they eat nutritious foods in the correct amounts? What do they do for fun? Do they let themselves enjoy their favorite treat sometimes? What kind of attitude do they have? You may not feel like this is you right now, and that’s okay! Make up a version of yourself that can accomplish your goals and pretend to be them when things get challenging. Pretty soon, you and that person will be the same.
Treat your body as if it is borrowed: Think of the person you love most in your life. Focus on that feeling of love. How would you treat their body if you switched bodies with them for a year? I bet you would do everything in your power to keep them happy, healthy, and thriving. You would work on their goals with zeal and be so excited to show them all the gains you made for them. That is how you should feel about YOURSELF. That is self-love! If you can't get motivated for yourself, get motivated for "someone else",
Remember that YOU are not your thoughts, and what you want in life typically lies behind what you think you fear. If you are finding that you are trying new things that feel scary, you are on the right path. That's where true growth lies. You got this!
